Step 10

The Interview

The private school interview is your chance to show who you really are beyond the written application. These private school interview tips cover what to wear, common questions, how to discuss your interests, and how much to say without sounding rehearsed. You will also learn how engaged listening, thoughtful questions, and a timely thank-you email can leave a positive impression on admissions officers.

Dress for Success

  • What this means is wearing something that presents you nicely, while being comfortable and breathable.
  • Make sure you aren't showing up in some sweatpants and a hoodie!
  • An example outfit would be chinos/shorts, a polo, and a (cold weather) jacket.
  • You could even wear a blazer and some dress pants!

The Questions

  • The best way to prepare for the interview is by practicing the questions.
  • Even though it is advertised as a casual conversation, that doesn't mean it's one without at least some preparation.
  • You will lead the conversation, not them, so it is up to you to decide what to say.
  • Make sure to keep bullet point responses so you can elaborate in the interview. The interviewer will know when someone is reciting from memory or clueless.

Mood

  • Be engaged! Even if you aren't, fake it till you make it! The enthusiasm will drive the whole interview.
  • Don't seem overly happy either; officers want to see your true self.

General Tips

  • Make sure to let the officer speak, don't cut them off. If you're really eager to answer, hold it until the officer pauses for you to speak.
  • Have a strong handshake! This is a must-do for a successful interview, as it shows your confidence.

How Much to Say

  • Limit your conversation to 4-5 topics. This is so it doesn't seem too packed, but also not dead in the room.
  • Limiting discussion was one of the things I had to work on!

Communications

  • As mentioned in the visit section, make sure you meet any coaches or teachers after your interview.
  • Make sure to schedule this via email about a week or a few days prior to the interview. If they can't, maybe have a Zoom call!

After the Interview Day

  • Remember to thank your tour guide and your interviewer by emailing. They are happy to help!
  • Make a format for the email (repurpose it) to use after future interviews and visits.
