Timeline
Private school application timeline, 2025–2026
This is the calendar I wish I had at the start. Dates vary by school, so confirm each one, but the order of operations rarely changes.
- June – August 2025
Build the foundation
- Have the family conversation about whether independent school is the right fit.
- Narrow a working list of schools and check each one's entry grades and testing policy.
- Start the candidate profile: activities, awards, and interests written down in one place.
- Begin SSAT or ISEE prep, and take a free practice test to see which suits you.
- Draft rough versions of the common essay prompts.
- September – October 2025
Lock in dates before they fill
- Create your Gateway to Prep Schools or SAO account.
- Book visit and interview slots now; popular dates disappear quickly.
- Register for a fall SSAT or ISEE date, leaving room for a retake.
- Attend open houses and first-look events at the schools on your list.
- Ask teachers for recommendations, in person, well before you need them.
- November – December 2025
Interviews and essays
- Complete campus visits and admissions interviews.
- Practice interview questions out loud, ideally with someone who follows up.
- Finish essays and short answers; aim to be done before winter break.
- Send thank-you emails to interviewers, tour guides, coaches, and teachers.
- Confirm recommendations have been submitted in each portal.
- January 2026
Deadlines
- Most private high school applications are due January 15; check every school individually.
- Submit score reports and any graded writing sample.
- Complete financial aid forms if you are applying for aid, which often have earlier deadlines.
- Double-check that every portal shows a complete file.
- February – March 2026
Decisions and revisits
- Stay in touch with admissions offices if anything new is worth sharing.
- Decisions typically arrive on March 10.
- Attend revisit days at the schools that admitted you.
- Enrollment contracts are usually due by April 10.
