SSAT Prep Resources
When I was preparing for the SSAT, I needed some easy, accessible guide which would point me to success.
Here are the resources I found most helpful for each section:
All Sections
- I started with the Princeton Review SSAT Prep book, but the "by yourself" learning style didn't fit me.
- So, I started using Test Innovators, an online resource with information on all topics. It had many different exercises on even specific question types.
- But Test Innovators still felt less interactive, so I started coaching at the Huntington Learning Center. This approach was the one I needed, as my mentor created a personalized learning track for me, so I could improve my weaknesses.
- I wasn't only using Huntington, but a combination of Test Innovators and the Princeton Review book as well. I took parts of each that appealed to me the most.
Verbal
- When you first take the practice test, this section will feel like a lot! But with constant practice and a strategic approach, it will feel easy.
- I think Huntington provided me with the best verbal section prep because of the vast resources available.
- Test Innovators comes in second for verbal prep, as it included types of analogies to watch out for.
- The book is more straightforward in verbal preparation, but it really depends on your learning style.
- Vocab is a big part of the verbal section, and a helpful resource I found is the SSAT Vocabulary Made Easy book.
Math
- Thankfully, the math section only covers topics up to Geometry (not Algebra 2), so most of it will be familiar. All it takes is a little practice to succeed!
- I recommend the Princeton Review SSAT Prep book.
- Test Innovators also had many different math exercises available for use.
Reading
- From my experience, I've noticed that the reading section is almost all practice and very little strategy (except for omitting).
- I recommend using the resources mentioned above.
